The Mozambican Hydrocarbons Company (CMH) donated 500,000 meticais on Tuesday (28), presented to First Lady Gueta Chapo, with the aim of supporting victims of floods and inundations in the country. The information was announced in an official statement.
The donation is part of a solidarity initiative by the company, which aims to help mitigate the impacts of natural disasters. The support comes at a time when thousands of families are facing hardships caused by heavy rains.
During the handover ceremony, CMH representative Joaquim Veríssimo explained that the gesture aims to align the company with the efforts led by the First Lady’s office. According to him, the institution has been closely monitoring the support initiatives directed at the most vulnerable communities.
“We have been following, on a daily basis, the consistent actions and the personal involvement of the First Lady herself in supporting vulnerable populations, especially those affected by natural disasters, with a particular focus on children, women, youth, and people with disabilities. This is significant work that has been carried out within the scope of the First Lady’s office projects,” stated Joaquim Veríssimo.
Mozambique is considered one of the countries most severely affected by climate change worldwide, facing recurring floods and tropical cyclones during the rainy season, which runs from October to April.
According to data from the National Institute for Disaster Risk Management and Reduction (INGD), the death toll for the current rainy season stands at 311. Since October of last year, more than one million people have been affected nationwide.
During the same period, 24,229 homes were partially destroyed, 11,996 were completely destroyed, and 209,219 were flooded. Additionally, 304 health facilities were affected in less than six months, further exacerbating the humanitarian situation.
The January floods alone caused at least 43 deaths, 147 injuries, and nine people missing, affecting 715,803 people. In recent days, some areas in the south of the country have experienced a new wave of flooding, increasing the pressure on affected communities.
