Health professionals have decided to suspend the strike initially scheduled for this Monday (31), opening the way for dialogue with the government. The decision was announced by Anselmo Muchave, president of the Association of Health Professionals, who said that the suspension of the strike is aimed at promoting dialogue with the authorities, after the government requested a meeting, scheduled for Thursday 3 April.
Muchave emphasised that the measure aims to allow a constructive approach to resolving the outstanding issues, including the payment of overtime and the improvement of the professionals’ framework.
‘We’ve come to announce that we’ve called off the strike in order to make room for dialogue, since the government has sent us an invitation for next Thursday. We hope that the dialogue will bring concrete solutions to the issues that afflict health professionals and the population in general,’ said the association’s leader.
Among the main points to be discussed are the regularisation of overtime pay, an improvement in working conditions and a solution to the shortage of medicines and food in health units.
The Association of Health Professionals emphasises that the suspension of the strike does not mean a definitive end to the movement, and that it could be resumed if the concerns are not adequately addressed by the government.
‘We are still waiting to see concrete action from the government, especially with regard to food in health units and the organisation of the supply of medicines. We want to know when these issues will be resolved legally and efficiently,’ said Muchave.
In addition, the Association has also denounced alleged harassment of its members, which adds a layer of tension to the negotiation scenario. The community of health professionals in Mozambique remains attentive to the unfolding of the negotiations and hopes that the government will present clear and effective solutions to the persistent problems.
