Health Sector Receives 16,000 Pairs of Gloves to Support Flood Victims in Maputo and Gaza

On Saturday (31), the health sector received 16,000 pairs of surgical gloves to support medical teams assisting flood victims in the provinces of Maputo and Gaza, in the south of the country, Lusa reported.

“These 16,000 pairs of gloves will make a big difference in the assistance we provide to our populations, especially those affected by floods and inundations,” said Nelson Mucopo, national director of Medical Assistance at the Ministry of Health, upon receiving the equipment.

According to Mucopo, the supplies, donated by a private company, will be used strictly to support flood victims, assisting the various medical teams on the ground providing medical support in accommodation centers.

“These are populations that are currently in need of some support, and our medical teams are on the ground providing all possible support, not only in rescuing those affected, but also in providing medical support in the accommodation centers,” added Nelson Mucopo.

The number of people affected by the January floods in the country has risen to 723,289, with 22 deaths, according to provisional data from the National Institute for Disaster Management and Risk Reduction (INGD).

According to information from the INGD database with data up to 2:30 p.m. local time on Friday, the floods that have been recorded in various parts of the country have already affected the equivalent of 170,223 families and more than 20,000 people in 24 hours. Since January 7, 45 people have been injured and nine are missing as a result of these floods, in addition to 3,541 houses partially destroyed, 794 totally destroyed, and 165,946 flooded.

The INGD record also points to 451,571 hectares of agricultural area affected, of which 275,765 are reported as lost, affecting the activity of 332,863 farmers, in addition to the death of 430,972 head of cattle, goats, and poultry.

Relief efforts continue for families besieged by floods, especially in Maputo and Gaza, in the south of the country, as a result of heavy rains over several days.

The European Union, the United States, Portugal, Angola, Spain, East Timor, Norway, and Japan, as well as neighboring countries, have already sent emergency humanitarian aid.
