Health authorities plan to vaccinate approximately 3.5 million people against cholera in nine districts across the country’s Northern and Central regions. The campaign is a response to the rise in reported cases in recent months, with a focus on the most affected areas.
The vaccination campaign begins next Friday, April 3, and will last seven days. The information was announced by the spokesperson for the Council of Ministers, Inocêncio Impissa, as part of the decisions made by the government.
The initiative will cover the districts of Nacala-Porto, Érati, and Monapo in Nampula Province. In Cabo Delgado, the districts of Pemba and Metuge will be included, while in Zambézia, the campaign will take place in Morrumbala.
In Tete province, vaccination will take place in Moatize and the city of Tete, and will also cover the city of Beira in Sofala province. These areas were designated as priorities due to the high number of reported cases.
Inocêncio Impissa, who also serves as Minister of State Administration and Public Service, was speaking during a press briefing held after the 9th regular session of the Council of Ministers. On that occasion, he explained the criteria used to select the areas covered.
Data from the Ministry of Health indicate that, from October 2025 through March 24 of this year, more than 8,000 cases of cholera were recorded in the country, resulting in 83 deaths. Nampula Province leads with 3,545 cases and 39 deaths, followed by Tete with 2,771 cases and 32 deaths.
Cabo Delgado recorded 1,050 cases and eight deaths, while Zambézia reported 129 cases and one death. Sofala province reported 392 cases and one death, and Manica recorded 132 cases and two deaths.
In the southern provinces, Gaza recorded one case, while Maputo Province and the city of Maputo reported two cases each. The case fatality rate remains at around 1%, with 49 people currently hospitalized, amid the rainy and cyclone season that began in October 2025 and is expected to end in late April.
