The Gulbenkian and La Caixa foundations have allocated 750,000 euros to five projects by female health researchers in Cape Verde, Angola and Mozambique over the next three years, with the aim of strengthening capacity building in clinical research, the Lusa news agency reported on Thursday 2 November.
“Five women will conduct research projects in the areas of cancer, malaria, respiratory diseases and genetics over the next three years, in Cape Verde, Angola and Mozambique, as part of the We Search competition (support for clinical research projects in the PALOP), in a partnership between the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and the La Caixa Foundation,” the two organisations announced in a statement sent to Lusa.
The award-winning projects were selected “from 75 applications and focus on a set of chronic diseases that particularly affect the population of these countries”, adds the text, which describes the aim of each of the projects: “to strengthen clinical research skills in research centres, reinforcing knowledge about the diagnosis and treatment of these diseases”.

Since 2015, the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and the Spanish La Caixa Foundation have been collaborating on health research in the Portuguese-speaking African countries (PALOP). At the end of 2022, they signed a collaboration protocol to develop a programme that encourages the countries’ scientific communities to carry out research projects that contribute to improving healthcare provision.
“This is how the We Search programme was born, a competition to strengthen scientific institutions and clinical research projects in the PALOP, in an initiative that represents a total commitment of 750,000 euros for the two foundations,” the statement said.
