The government has secured $580,000 in funding to kick-start the digitalization of 63 healthcare units across the country, as part of a broader effort to modernize the health sector with support from international partners, Lusa reported.
The amount, equivalent to around 40 million meticais, was mobilized with support from the World Bank and is part of a program aimed at accelerating the introduction of technological solutions in healthcare services, improving efficiency in patient care and enhancing clinical data management.
According to the National Director of Planning and Cooperation at the Ministry of Health, José Manuel, the funding represents an initial step in a more ambitious plan that also involves the United States government. As part of the same process, a memorandum of understanding was signed to support the digitalization of a total of 863 healthcare units over five years, out of an estimated 1,900 units across Mozambique.
“This effort must run in parallel with incentives for the private sector and other relevant stakeholders to ensure the continued development of health technology solutions that can complement this process,” the official said on the sidelines of the Mozambique Digital Health Conference, held in Maputo.
The event, which brings together national and international experts, serves as a platform for sharing experiences and mobilizing resources from strategic partners, including private sector entities, to support the implementation of the country’s digital health coverage plan.
Health authorities argue that investing in digitalization will help modernize services, reduce waiting times at healthcare facilities, lower operational costs, and bring care closer to communities, especially in a context of population growth and rising demand.
However, José Manuel stressed that the success of the process depends not only on the introduction of technology, but also on strengthening infrastructure, training healthcare professionals, and improving digital literacy among the population.
“It is not enough to digitalize healthcare units. It is necessary to build a solid infrastructure base and ensure that both professionals and citizens are prepared to use these tools,” he said.
At the same time, the country has already launched pilot projects implementing digital solutions at Mavalane General Hospital in Maputo. Digital infrastructure development is also underway in Chimoio, in Manica Province, and at Beira Central Hospital.
