Government: More Than 800 People Died From Road Accidents in 2024

The Minister of Transport and Logistics, João Matlombe, revealed on Thursday 13 March that a total of 825 people died in 2024 in the country as a result of road accidents, representing a 9% increase on the 654 deaths recorded in 2023.

‘Last year, we recorded 687 road accidents, compared to 668 in 2023, corresponding to an increase of 3%. As a result, 825 people died and another 615 were injured,’ he explained during the Technical Council of the National Road Transport Institute.

With this in mind, the minister called for compliance with the rules, as well as for an increase in enforcement, which consists of the presence of police authorities on public roads with the aim of ensuring tranquillity on the roads.

‘We urge the adoption of more intelligent measures and devices to prevent accidents on Mozambican roads,’ he emphasised.

Road accident rates in Mozambique are classified as dramatic by various organisations. In the last five years, they have been responsible for the deaths of more than 4,000 people.

The authorities point to speeding, mechanical defects, poor pedestrian crossing, giving way, irregular overtaking and drink-driving as the main causes of accidents in the country.
