Government and UNESCO Strengthen Cooperation in Education and Sustainable Tourism

The President of the Republic, Daniel Chapo, and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) reviewed various areas of cooperation on Thursday, April 30, including education and sustainable tourism, announced the Director-General of the UN agency, Khaled El-Enany, expressing expectations of tangible results for the country.

“Today I explored with His Excellency different areas of partnership, including education, STEM education [Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics], teacher training, TVET [Technical and Vocational Education and Training], AI [Artificial Intelligence], climate resilience, journalist training, cultural heritage, and sustainable tourism,” El-Enany told the press on the sidelines of an audience with the Head of State in Maputo.

According to the official, many areas of partnership were discussed during the meeting, and he said he was “looking forward to the near future bringing very tangible results for the people of Mozambique.”

The meeting also served, according to Khaled El-Enany, for the delivery of the certificate of inscription of Maputo National Park on the UNESCO World Heritage List, a status granted to the conservation area on July 13 of last year.

“There are 1,248 sites classified as World Heritage worldwide. Mozambique had only one, and last year, in 2025, a second site was added to this global list of locations recognized as having outstanding universal value. This site was inscribed as a Natural Heritage site. I visited it last year and it is an area that deserves to be protected for future generations,” El-Enany added.

The UNESCO representative also praised the work of the authorities and the National Commission with the organization in the processes of nomination and heritage preservation.

“I know that Mozambican authorities and the National Commission are now working on a series of nominations for Creative Cities and UNESCO chairs. You have a very active delegation in Paris (France), and a very active National Commission here,” he concluded.
