“The EU and Mozambique maintain a long-standing partnership that spans various areas, including the security and defense sectors. In this regard, the EU supports the country’s efforts to promote peace in Cabo Delgado and neighboring provinces,” stated the document released by the Club of Mozambique.

Last year, the European Union Military Assistance Mission in Mozambique announced that it had trained more than 800 Mozambican military personnel in 36 training programs.

Among the activities carried out, programs in the areas of command and control, logistics, maintenance and transportation, leadership, military pedagogy, civil-military cooperation, strategic communication, institutional advisory services to the General Staff of the FADM, and training of trainers for Rapid Reaction Force instructors stood out.

The governments of Mozambique and Portugal have requested the renewal of the mandate of the European Union Military Assistance Mission in Mozambique, currently led by Portugal, proposing that it be extended until at least 2028. The call is included in the final declaration of the 6th Luso-Mozambican Summit, held in the city of Porto, under the leadership of President Daniel Chapo and Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro.

EUMAM MOZ is a non-executive mission, with a mandate running until June 2026, and focuses on the operational training and maintenance cycle, also providing specialized training to the Mozambican Armed Forces (FADM) to prepare them to be self-sufficient in combating the insurgency that has ravaged some districts of Cabo Delgado province since 2017.

Currently, the European Union Military Assistance Mission in Mozambique is under the command of Commodore César Manuel Pires Correia of the Portuguese Navy and comprises a total of 83 military personnel from 12 countries.
