The German government on Wednesday, November 9, announced support of 199 million euros for sectors of social and economic development in Mozambique, as part of closer bilateral cooperation.
A joint statement from the German embassy in Maputo and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Mozambique said that the funding will be channeled to the areas of vocational education, decentralization and public finance, sustainable economic development and renewable energy.
The new financial package was agreed during negotiations between the delegations of the two countries, held on Tuesday and Wednesday, the statement said.
“The parties reaffirmed their mutual desire to further strengthen bilateral relations, based on mutual trust and reciprocal advantages, which characterizes this long-standing partnership,” the text reads.
On the occasion, the head of the German delegation, Alois Schneider, from the Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development, said that “Germany is a committed, reliable and experienced partner that supports Mozambique in implementing its development objectives through effective cooperation.
The European country is one of Mozambique’s largest bilateral donors, with a long history of cooperation, Schneider added.
He said that the German aid will focus more on the northern region of the country, where the province of Cabo Delgado has been affected by an armed terrorist insurgency since 2017.
In his turn, Aristides Adriano, head of the Mozambican delegation at the negotiations, said that the Mozambican government recognizes the importance of the partnership with Germany, in the context of development cooperation.
