General Protests: UN Demands Accountability for Human Rights Violators

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) has called on the national authorities to hold to account those responsible for the use of violence and disproportionate force against demonstrators during the mass protests called by former presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane to demand ‘electoral justice’ and reject the fraudulent results of the ballot held on 9 October.

‘The authorities must ensure that all human rights violations and abuses are effectively and independently investigated and that those responsible are brought to justice. Human rights are fundamental to creating sustainable solutions, combating injustice and addressing the root causes of conflict, and are therefore the basis for sustainable development, peace and security,’ reads the OHCHR statement, quoted by Agência de Informação de Moçambique.

The organisation also demands state accountability for the victims of police violence, stating that ‘they must also benefit from reparations and effective remedies.’

‘It is crucial that freedom of peaceful assembly is respected and facilitated and that the security forces refrain from resorting to unnecessary or disproportionate use of force. All parties involved must take steps to reduce tensions and resolve any electoral disputes peacefully,’ the document adds.

The OHCHR also expressed its willingness to support the country with the aim of promoting respect for and protection of human rights, as well as ensuring accountability for violations and abuses related to the elections.

According to the non-governmental organisation (NGO) Electoral Platform Decide, since the mass demonstrations began on 21 October 2024, at least 303 people have been shot dead by the police and 619 others have been injured by gunfire.
