A total of 250 deputies elected in the general elections on 9 October will take office today, Monday 13 January. The act marks the beginning of the 10th legislature of the Assembly of the Republic.
The swearing-in ceremony of the new Parliament will be led by the President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, in one of his last public acts as head of state before handing over power to Daniel Chapo, who takes office next Wednesday, 15 January.
According to the results proclaimed by the Constitutional Council, the new Parliament will have four political parties for the first time in history, namely Frelimo, which has been in power for 50 years; the newcomer Podemos; Renamo, which will leave its position as the largest opposition party; and the Democratic Movement of Mozambique (MDM), which will move from third to fourth largest political force in the country.
