General Elections: João Lourenço Sends Representative to Daniel Chapo’s Inauguration

Like the Portuguese President, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, the Angolan head of state, João Lourenço, will also be absent from the swearing-in ceremony of the new Mozambican President, Daniel Chapo.

To this end, the Angolan government has sent the country’s Minister of State and Head of the Civil House, Adão de Almeida, to take part in the inauguration, which will take place on Wednesday 15 January in Maputo’s Independence Square.

For this day when more than 2,000 guests are expected, the Mozambican government has decreed a full stop of grace, a measure that extends to the public and private sectors, but does not cover workers ‘whose activities, by [their] nature, cannot be interrupted.’

On 23 December, Mozambique’s Constitutional Council proclaimed Daniel Chapo, the candidate supported by the ruling Mozambican Liberation Front (Frelimo), as the winner of the Mozambican President election, with 65.17% of the vote.

Mozambique is experiencing post-election instability, with violent demonstrations almost everywhere in the country. Last Saturday, Venâncio Mondlane called for three days of strike action in Mozambican from Monday 13 January, and for ‘peaceful demonstrations’ during the inauguration of the members of Parliament and the new Mozambican President, challenging the electoral process.

Since 21 October, when the protest against the 9 October general elections began, the Decide electoral platform (a non-governmental organisation that monitors the process) has recorded almost 300 deaths and more than 600 people shot.
