General Elections: EU Observers to Stay Until Electoral Process is Complete

The European Union Election Observation Mission (EU EOM) will remain in Mozambique until all stages of the electoral process have been completed, namely the tabulation and validation of results, the mission said in a statement on Wednesday (23). The decision aims to ensure complete and continuous monitoring of all the stages following the general elections recently held in the country.

The next phase of the process includes the official announcement of the results by the National Electoral Commission (CNE), a moment that will be closely monitored by the European observers. In its statement, the EU EOM emphasises the importance of its presence in ensuring the transparency and integrity of the entire electoral process, stressing the European Union’s commitment to consolidating the democratic rule of law in Mozambique.

The mission also calls on the Mozambican authorities to act swiftly and rigorously in the investigation into the murder of Elvino Dias and Paulo Guambe, figures linked to the Podemos party, recommending that the material and moral perpetrators of the crime be held accountable. The EU EOM also calls for restraint on the part of all parties involved, promoting respect for the political rights and fundamental freedoms of all citizens.

To reinforce confidence in the electoral process, the EU EOM calls on the electoral management bodies to conduct the tabulation of results with maximum transparency and credibility. The communiqué emphasises the importance of publishing the results broken down by polling station, considering this measure not only a good practice, but an additional guarantee of the integrity of the final results.

In the same document, the mission reaffirms that it is essential for the electoral administration to clarify any irregularities, and for the Constitutional Council to act swiftly and fairly in validating the results, respecting the will expressed by voters at the ballot box.

The EU EOM began its activities in Mozambique on 1 September and deployed 179 observers on election day, guaranteeing comprehensive coverage throughout the country. The EU observers will continue to be present until the entire process is completed, reinforcing their commitment to monitoring the election at every stage, from voting to the validation of the final results.
