The National Electoral Commission (CNE) has made it known that it does not have the air resources to transport the Polling Station Managers (MMVs) and sensitive materials needed to assist in the voting process that will take place on 9 October, as part of the seventh general elections.
‘At the moment, we’ve requested airlifts so that we can transport the MMVs who will be working on polling day and we expect them to arrive a few days before the elections take place,’ explained CNE spokesman Paulo Cuinica.
He emphasised that the organisation is concerned about the security situation in the areas targeted by terrorist attacks throughout Cabo Delgado province. ‘We believe that we will be able to hold elections in these places. We hope that the Defence and Security Forces will guarantee the necessary conditions for the process to run smoothly,’ he argued.
Speaking at a press conference, Cuinica said that the electoral bodies are already inspecting the voting materials that will be used in the districts to check the transparency of the activities.
According to figures from the National Electoral Commission, more than 17 million voters are registered to vote, including 333,800 registered abroad, and 184,300 MMVs have been trained to serve the 26,300 polling stations that are available.
Running for president are Daniel Chapo, supported by the Mozambique Liberation Front (Frelimo), Ossufo Momade, supported by the Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo), Lutero Simango, for the Mozambique Democratic Movement (MDM), and Venâncio Mondlane, a former Renamo member and MP, supported by the Optimist Party for the Development of Mozambique (Podemos), a movement without parliamentary representation.
