The Mozambican authorities said on Thursday, 18 January, that rehabilitation work on existing hydrometric stations along the Limpopo basin in Gaza province, southern Mozambique, is expected to be completed in March. The work, which began at the end of 2023 and will last four months, is valued at 45 million meticais
According to the National Director of Limpopo Basin Management at the Southern Regional Water Administration (ARA-Sul), Ivan Cuna, equipment damaged by floods in previous years has already been replaced.
“Once all the equipment has been assembled, it will be calibrated to ensure it is fully functional,” he said.
Even with the works, the source guaranteed that the conditions are in place for permanent monitoring of the behaviour of the soils and watercourses that form part of the Limpopo basin.
ARA-Sul reported on Wednesday (17) that there is a possibility of rising water levels in several rivers located in the south of the country, due to the heavy rainfall experienced in recent days.
“In view of the forecasts released by the National Meteorological Institute (INAM) for moderate to heavy rainfall of between 30 and 50 millimetres in 24 hours in the provinces of Maputo, Gaza and Inhambane, the hydrometric levels in the main courses and their tributaries are expected to rise,” the organisation warned in a statement.
