Mozambique's Government Information Office (GabInfo) has called for an acceleration of digital transformation across the country's public institutions, arguing that the adoption of new technologies is essential to modernise state communication and broaden citizen access to information.
The position was presented on Thursday in Maputo by GabInfo director Luís Canhemba during the opening of the institution's 5th Coordinating Council, held under the theme 'Public Communication in the Era of Digital Transformation'. "Our institutions have no way of circumventing this need. They must adapt and therefore accept that the digital transformation process is clearly unavoidable," Canhemba said.
The director explained that digital technologies are reshaping the way people receive, produce and share information, compelling public institutions and media organisations to overhaul their working methods.
According to Canhemba, the objective is to make government communication more coordinated, professional and responsive, while also better aligned with the information needs of citizens.
Canhemba also advocated for stronger coordination between state communication bodies and the broader media landscape, to ensure that information reaches all segments of the population, including those in the most remote parts of the country. "Today it is inconceivable — we have the technologies, we have the human and technological capacity, so we must bring information to the most remote places," he said.
The GabInfo director characterised information and communication as strategic instruments for economic and social development, arguing that access to information should not be determined by a citizen's geographic location. "A misinformed society is inconceivable — it is not possible for a misinformed society to achieve development," he stressed.
Disinformation and the spread of fake news were also identified as key challenges facing public communication. Canhemba said institutions must develop mechanisms to counter the circulation of false content that can affect the daily lives of citizens.
The 5th Coordinating Council of GabInfo runs over two days and brings together senior officials and other stakeholders from the information and media sector to examine the challenges of public communication in an environment increasingly shaped by the use of digital technologies.
