The French government has expressed its willingness to support the new Mozambican leaders, with a view to achieving development, stability and tranquillity in the country, and has also shown an interest in deepening cooperation relations in various areas.
The information is contained in a letter of congratulations sent to Daniel Chapo by his French counterpart, Emmanuel Macron, following his election as the fifth Mozambican President.
In the document released by the Agência de Informação de Moçambique Macron also said that he was ‘pleased to be able to strengthen the bilateral relationship with President Chapo, which is already very rich in the areas of the economy, investment and maritime security.’
‘The French Development Agency is implementing 31 projects totalling 368 million euros (24.2 billion meticals). Our cooperation on maritime security has also been strengthened by the Intergovernmental Defence Agreement signed in December 2023. I hope we can deepen our partnership on the regional and international stage,’ he added.

Mozambique’s new government
Macron said that, after the recent challenges faced by the country, he hopes that, under the leadership of Daniel Chapo, the government will be able to respond to everyone’s aspirations, and assured France of its willingness to support Mozambique.
Last year, the French President said that his country was fully mobilised to support Mozambican President Daniel Chapo in re-establishing security and development in the province of Cabo Delgado, which has been plagued by terrorism for over seven years.
Daniel Chapo was sworn in as Mozambican President on 15 January. He had previously been governor of Inhambane province until, in May 2024, he was chosen by the Central Committee to be Frelimo’s candidate to succeed Filipe Nyusi (who served two terms as Mozambican President).
