Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi said that the conditions exist to ‘maintain peace’ and promote reconciliation in 2025, despite more than two months of post-election violence that has already caused almost 300 deaths and much destruction, Lusa reported.
‘We are working towards this. I believe that the government will continue to work towards that. And there are conditions, but above all, there is capacity in Mozambicans to maintain peace,’ Nyusi declared after a visit to the Community of St Egidio in Maputo, in the south of the country.
The Catholic organisation is known for its charity work and peace promotion, having mediated the General Peace Agreement, signed in Rome in 1992, which put an end to 16 years of civil war between the Mozambique Liberation Front (Frelimo) and the Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo).
Since the first results of the general elections on 9 October 2024 were announced, Mozambique has faced successive stoppages and demonstrations called by presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane, who is contesting the results. These mobilisations have degenerated into episodes of violence, intensifying instability in the country.
‘We have to find a way out,’ he said, adding, however, that it is important to “avoid dramatisations”. The President insisted that the purpose of the visit to the Santo Egídio Community was to emphasise the social reintegration work carried out by the institution and not to address political issues.
The Mozambican Constitutional Council has already scheduled the inauguration of the new Mozambican President, who will succeed Filipe Nyusi, for 15 January.
