Filipe Nyusi Proposes Creation of a National Peace and Reconciliation Commission

The President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, today (04) called for reflection to find ways of preserving peace, suggesting the creation of a National Peace Commission as a solution for preserving harmony.

Speaking today at Praça dos Heróis in Maputo, on the 32nd anniversary of the signing of the Rome Agreement in Italy, which marked the end of the civil war that lasted a decade and a half, Nyusi argued that the spirit of dialogue should be favoured as an effective way of maintaining peace.

‘We can draw inspiration from models developed in other countries, we can draw on the experience of creating a peace and reconciliation commission,’ said the Mozambican head of state.

On the occasion, the Mozambican statesman classified the 16-year war as one of the bloodiest in modern history, pointing out that ‘the agreement that is being commemorated today has created the conditions for the country to enter the path of development and economic growth towards prosperity and the well-being of the population’.
