Filipe Nyusi Considers the Reintegration of Macau and Hong Kong into China “Very Successful”

Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi pointed out that the reintegration of Macau and Hong Kong into China should be seen as an example of ‘success’ looking at the principle of ‘One country, two systems’, reiterating that the country is available to support Beijing in its demand for the reunification of Taiwan.

‘Mozambique reaffirms its firm and consistent support for the principles of ‘One China’ in the Taiwan Strait and ‘One country, two systems’, which are being applied very successfully in Hong Kong and Macau,’ he said.

Speaking during a meeting with his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, as part of his working visit to that Asian country, the statesman expressed solidarity with China against all accusations of alleged human rights violations and attempts at economic isolation, while also showing favouritism for the policies applied to the African continent.

Nyusi praised Xi Jinping for his efforts in the search for a fairer and more balanced international system, through initiatives such as global development, global security, global civilisation, the new silk road and Artificial Intelligence.

On the other hand, the head of state encouraged the continuation of constructive dialogue between China and neighbouring countries on the issue of the South China Sea, also highlighting China’s leadership in eradicating poverty in the Asian nation.

‘We reiterate Mozambique’s commitment to maintaining good relations with the People’s Republic of China, in the multilateral sphere and on issues of common interest. We are grateful for the solidarity we have received, aimed at qualitative development for the modernisation and rejuvenation of the economy,’ he concluded.

Filipe Nyusi is in China at the invitation of Xi Jinping, to take part in the 9th Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) and the China-Mozambique Business Forum.

FOCAC is taking place in Beijing from 4 to 6 September with the theme: ‘Joining hands to promote modernisation and build a high-level China-Africa community with a shared future’.
