The spokesperson of the Mozambique Republic Police (PRM) General Command, Leonel Muchina, announced that 23 people lost their lives in road traffic accidents during the festive season, between December 20, 2025, and January 2, 2026, across the country.
The information was made public on Monday, January 5, during a press briefing presenting the festive season report, where the PRM also provided an update on crime and road traffic incidents recorded during this period.
According to Leonel Muchina, 164 criminal cases were recorded nationwide over these days. In the same period, there were approximately 18 road traffic accidents, resulting in 23 fatalities and 19 serious injuries.
The spokesperson explained that the police focused particularly on days of higher traffic flow of people and vehicles. “This is the overall number from December 20 to January 2, but during the peak festive days—December 24, 25, 31, 2025, and January 1, 2026—we recorded a total of ten crimes, compared to three during the same period last year,” he stated.
Regarding road accidents on these specific days, Leonel Muchina added: “In terms of traffic accidents, we had seven, compared to 11 recorded in the same period last year.”
Given the high number of accidents during the festive season, road transport authorities are reinforcing prevention measures. The National Road Transport Institute (INATRO) is launching a pilot phase of a traffic violations monitoring center aimed at reducing road accidents across the country.
