The European Union reaffirmed its commitment to supporting structural reforms in Mozambique, at a meeting that brought together the EU ambassador, Antonino Maggiore, and the executive coordinator of the Office of Reforms and Strategic Projects, Osvaldo João Machatine. The meeting was also attended by ambassadors from 11 EU member states resident in the country.
On the occasion, Antonino Maggiore emphasised the importance of the reforms for Mozambique’s economic and social development, stressing that the European Union and its member states are committed to supporting the process. The diplomat acknowledged the challenges facing the implementation of the reforms, but stressed the need for concrete progress to boost the country’s modernisation.
For the European Union, the scope of the reforms goes beyond institutional improvements and should directly benefit the population, the private sector and social development. ‘The European Union and its member states are ready to work with Mozambique for Mozambique, promoting reforms that have an impact on society as a whole,’ said Maggiore.
The diplomat also highlighted Mozambican President Daniel Chapo’s strong leadership in advancing reforms, recognising his role in creating consensus between different political sectors. ‘The key word is ‘reforms’, and the political commitment shown by the President has been essential to the progress of this process,’ he emphasised.
The executive coordinator of the Office of Reforms and Strategic Projects, Osvaldo Machatine, presented the main strategic lines of the country’s reform agenda, emphasising President Chapo’s direct involvement in driving structural changes.
During the meeting, the mechanisms for co-operation between Mozambique and the European Union were also discussed, highlighting the need for greater co-operation between the partners in order to guarantee the success of the reforms.
‘The European Union and its member states are ready to collaborate with this Cabinet and accelerate concrete reforms for the country’s growth,’ Maggiore assured, reinforcing Europe’s commitment to providing technical and financial support for the process.
