EU Guarantees Neutral and Impartial Observation of 9 October Elections

The European Union (EU) group observing the 9 October elections has already started arriving in the country. There will be a total of 150 members who, according to the head of the mission, Laura Cereza, will not interfere in the elections and will be completely impartial.

The European Union’s election observers have already started arriving in the country. This Monday, the head of the mission was received by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation.

Laura Cereza says that the group will not interfere in the elections and guarantees total impartiality.

‘We want to emphasise our working principles, which are always neutrality and impartiality in observing this electoral process. We won’t interfere in any way and we have a methodology that has been defined and tested over many years to carry out this observation.

We follow the international standards of the rest of the organisations,’ said Laura Cereza, head of the European Union Electoral Observation Mission in Mozambique.

In fact, it will take the European Union more than two months to release its report or recommendations for the country.

‘We’re not going to make any public statements until 48 hours after the elections, because we want to respect the electoral process as much as possible and not interfere, letting everything develop as it should.

After two or two and a half months, I will return with a team to present the conclusions and the electoral observation report, as well as possible recommendations,’ explained Cereza.

The mission will be made up of 150 observers and will be able to operate throughout the country.

‘It’s a very large mission, made up of short- and long-term observers. We’ll also have a mission from the European Parliament (MEPs), which will arrive in the week of 9 October, and also diplomats from different member states,’ she concluded.

Last May, the European Union called for this year’s elections to be transparent and fraud-free, given the level of protest and alleged fraud reported by civil society and opposition parties in the sixth local elections.
