EU and Mozambique Launch “VaMoz Digital!” Programme Valued at 9.3 Million Euros

On Wednesday 19 June, the European Union (EU) and the government launched the VaMoz Digital! programme, an initiative worth 9.3 million euros (630.6 million meticais) aimed at training young people in subjects related to entrepreneurship and digital services.

In her speech, the European High Commissioner for International Partnerships, Jutta Urpilainen, explained that the project will provide opportunities in digital skills and access to tools for business development, targeting young women and people with disabilities.

“The initiative will contribute to the promotion of safe digital inclusion, will help reduce the major focus of gender inequality, and will serve as a testimony to the EU’s support for partner countries in terms of access to people-centred digitalisation, especially for young people,” she said.

For his part, the Minister of Transport and Communications, Mateus Magala, said that VaMoz Digital! is in line with the “Digital Transformation” project implemented by the Mozambican Executive, as it will help strengthen the political and regulatory framework towards the development of technology.

“The digital economy is a reality, we need to have a legal framework capable of encouraging growth in this area, while at the same time guaranteeing the generation of income for the country’s development,” said Magala.

He argued that more should be invested in improving the institutional capacity of the government bodies responsible for digital transformation, giving more space for innovation in priority sectors.

According to a Lusa publication, the VaMoz Digital! programme will be implemented by the Government of Italy, through the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation.
