Esperança Bias Visits Cyclone Freddy Victims in Zambezia

The Speaker of Parliament visited 382 families removed from the areas affected by Tropical Cyclone Freddy, in Quelimane, to the resettlement area of Nametangurine, in Nicoadala district. The number one in Parliament called for resilient construction to natural phenomena and to take preventive measures against cholera.

The effects of tropical cyclone Freddy have forced the movement of 382 families from the city of Quelimane to the resettlement area of Nametangurine in Nicoadala district. It is expected that these families will stay permanently in the place where they were resettled and will not return to their areas of origin.

Rita Francisco, who lived in the Sangariveira neighbourhood in Quelimane, says she lost everything she had and that the challenge at the moment is to rebuild life in the neighbourhood where she was resettled, where at least 53 tents have already been set up to house the families.

“I am here with my family. The cyclone made me lose everything we had built with sacrifice. Although precarious, we had a house and various possessions. Everything was gone with the force of the rain and strong winds. We are going through difficult days, because we are no longer living as we used to. Here we are getting food support, but it’s not enough for our satisfaction. We lack machetes, hoes and much more, to develop our lives,” said Rita Francisco, as she cooked chima and beans for her family near her tent.

Abílio Sandaca, another resident of Nametangurine, who arrived in that neighbourhood at the time of the 2015 floods, says life became more complicated with the passage of Tropical Cyclone Freddy.

“We lost everything that we had already built. We are living a hungry situation here, because we have nothing. Our production has been affected and our house has fallen down. The days are difficult; we are living anyway,” he said.

The President of the Assembly of the Republic (AR), Esperança Bias, visited those affected by Cyclone Freddy in the districts of Nicoadala and Namacurra, in Zambezia province. Her delegation included the leaders of Frelimo parliamentary group, Sérgio Pantie, and of Renamo parliamentary group, Viana Magalhães, who showed solidarity with the population.

“We, the 250 deputies that make up the Assembly of the Republic, were called by the President of the Assembly (of the Republic) to donate a day’s salary to support the families. In parallel to this gesture, our parliamentary group, Frelimo, will reinforce the support with another day of salary to comfort the families,” said Sergio Pantie.

Viana Magalhães made it known that, recently, the deputies of his bench, with emphasis on the constituency of Zambezia, donated food products and that more support will continue to be made for the good of the population.
