Education: More Than 10,500 Classes Are Being Taught Outdoors Across the Country

The Minister of Education and Culture, Samaria dos Anjos Tovela, revealed that around 10,500 classes are still being held outdoors in the country and described the situation in Cabo Delgado, Nampula, Zambézia, and Maputo provinces as critical.

“We have a higher number. We are currently at about 10,500 outdoor classes overall, according to the statistical data we have,” said Samaria Tovela, as reported by Lusa.

According to the minister, the provinces of Cabo Delgado and Nampula in the north, Zambézia in the center, and Maputo in the south are the most affected, although the remaining provinces of Mozambique also face issues with outdoor classes.

“We are effectively working. Where there are more problems, we are investing there,” concluded Samaria Tovela.

On February 20, the Minister of Education announced that thousands of students across the country would begin classes in tents due to the complete destruction of nearly 400 schools caused by floods that hit Mozambique since January.

“We must organize ourselves so that all our children are accommodated in our schools,” said Samaria Tovela, adding that tents would be installed as temporary teaching and learning spaces.

The minister explained that the intervention mainly targets areas where “schools have been completely destroyed,” acknowledging that across the country, particularly in the south, 1,710 schools of different levels were damaged by the January floods, including 376 completely destroyed, as well as 362 support infrastructures such as teachers’ houses and other facilities.
