District Elections Prompt Extraordinary Session of Parliament

The Standing Committee of the Assembly of the Republic (CPAR) decided this Tuesday (18), in Maputo, to call for the beginning of the 5th extraordinary session of Parliament, for a punctual revision of the Constitution of the Republic, aiming to postpone the district elections.

Meeting in its 42nd ordinary parliamentary session, CPAR decided to debate, from 3 to 7 August, the Draft Punctual Revision of the Constitution of the Republic, “with regard to article 311, in its point 3, which deals with the holding of district elections in 2024”.

“The issue that arises for the piecemeal review of the Constitution of the Republic is the postponement of the commencement of the holding of district elections to a date that will be agreed upon. There is no other point raised for review in the debates of the next plenary session,” assured Parliament spokesman Alberto Matukutuku.

In May, a commission set up by the government to study the issue presented an opinion that pointed to the postponement of district elections and ruling party Frelimo deposited a proposal to revise the Constitution to that effect in Parliament.

In the next parliamentary session, starting on 3 August, the Assembly of the Republic (AR) will also consider the Proposal for the Revision of the Labour Law, the Proposal for the Law that Creates the Sovereign Fund and the Proposal for the Revision of the Basic Law on the Creation, Organisation and Functioning of Local Authorities.
