With 178 votes from the Frelimo bench, the punctual revision of the Constitution of the Republic of Mozambique (CRM) was approved earlier. With this approval, the holding of the first district elections, which were scheduled for 2024, is postponed.
The approved proposal amends Article 311(3) of the CRM to state that the first district elections will be held only when the material and financial conditions are met.
Those who voted against – Renamo (44 deputies) and MDM (5) – say the decision reveals the arrogance of the majority party.
“Frelimo has just torn up the Constitution of the Republic and the will of Mozambicans. If it is for lack of money, remove the Secretary of State, which is an unnecessary expense and which embarrasses the elected figure of Governor.”
