Rail traffic has been interrupted since Sunday on the Ressano Garcia line in Maputo, which links Mozambique and South Africa, due to the derailment of a freight train, an official source told Lusa today.
“All traffic is currently interrupted,” said Adélio Dias, spokesman for the Mozambique Railways (CFM).
According to the official, the train, coming from South Africa, was carrying 50 wagons of chromium, five of which derailed and two overturned on Sunday afternoon at Chanculo station, in Maputo province, without causing any casualties.
“Preliminarily, the garrote is the factor that precipitated the derailment,” added Adélio Dias, noting that teams are on the ground to resolve the situation.
Traffic on the Ressano Garcia line could be reopened today from 20:00 (18:00 in Lisbon), another CFM source told Lusa.
