The deputies of the Assembly of the Republic (AR) have guaranteed to appreciate, in a positive way, still during the current sixth ordinary session of the 9th legislature, the draft law that creates new local municipalities, and whose authorship is from the Mozambican Government.

According to the Mozambican Information Agency, the commitment was expressed this Tuesday, December 6, in the city of Matola, Maputo province, by the President of the Public Administration and Local Power Commission in the Assembly of the Republic (4th Commission), Lucília Hama.

Speaking in the concluding act of a series of public hearings that the deputies held in the country’s southern provinces, the president of the 4th Commission of the Assembly of the Republic expressed satisfaction for the contributions received from various social groups, aimed at enriching the draft law.

Quoted by Notícias, Lucília Hama explained that the deputies are engaged in the preparation of the opinion regarding the bill, a document that, according to her, “is structural and requires consensus in its approval, with a view to consolidating the decentralization process and ensuring the participation of populations in decision-making on matters of their interest.

The Council of Ministers approved in October the creation of 12 more municipalities, increasing the number of municipalities from 53 to 65. These are the village of Marracuene and the administrative post of Matola-Rio, in Maputo province; the village of Massingir, in Gaza; Homoíne, in Inhambane; Caia, in Sofala; the village of Guro, in Manica; the village of Morrumbala, in Zambezia; the headquarters of the administrative post of Chitima, in Tete; the village of Mossuril, in Nampula; the village of Ibo and Balama, in Cabo Delgado; and Insaca, headquarters village of Mecanhelas district, in Niassa.

The proposal will be submitted to Parliament and will require the reorganization of the National Elections Commission’s program, which is currently preparing for the 2023 local elections, Filimão Suaze explained.
