Flooding caused by heavy rains recorded during the passage of tropical storm Freddy in the province of Manica resulted in the loss of nearly two thousand hectares of various crops by washout.
The most affected districts are Tambara, Guro, Macate, Sussundenga and Mossurize.
The information was advanced by the provincial director of Agriculture and Fisheries in Manica, Ernesto Lopes, this Saturday, March 25, during Radio Mozambique’s Linha Directa programme, when he was talking about the ongoing actions to restore the lives of the affected people.
“Three scenarios happened here. First, there were floods; second, the lodging of crops; and third, the dragging of crops. In this way, 8,164 hectares were affected, of which 1,813 were lost”, explained Ernesto Lopes.
He stressed that “the 1,813 hectares that are completely lost are part of the crops affected by the third scenario, which is the dragging”, from which maize and sesame crops stand out.
As well as crops, cyclone Freddy also caused, in Manica, the destruction of over 80 classrooms, affecting 47 schools in the districts of Mossurize, Vanduzi, Guro, Báruè, Manica, Chimoio, Machaze and Macate, Tambara, Gondola and Macossa.
