The cyclonic system ‘Dikeledi’ entered the Mozambique Channel today in the form of a severe tropical storm. In the next few hours, the natural phenomenon could evolve into an intense tropical cyclone.
The bad weather warning was issued this Sunday by the National Meteorological Institute through these two communiqués.
For now, the districts of Memba, Nacala, Monapo, Meconta, Mossuril, Ilha de Moçambique, Mogincual, Angoche and Moma, in Nampula, are at risk.
In the last 24 hours, the cyclonic system known as ‘DIKELEDI’ crossed the island of Madagascar and then entered the Mozambique Channel as a severe tropical storm at dawn on Sunday.
It is expected that in the coming hours, the phenomenon will continue its progressive movement over the Mozambique Channel, intensifying and possibly reaching the category of tropical cyclone and intense tropical cyclone, respectively.
According to INAM, the minimum distance that the system will approach the Mozambican coast is around 150 kilometres. Winds of 60 kilometres per hour and heavy rain are expected from Monday afternoon.
In the warning issued to the Navy, severe thunderstorms and winds with very strong gusts of 63 to 88 kilometres per hour are also expected in the Mozambique Channel, causing waves at sea between 4 and 7 metres high.
