The Canadian Red Cross has made a total of 30,000 euros (1.9 million meticals) available to support 500 families affected by Cyclone Dikeledi in the Mossuril district of Nampula province in northern Mozambique.
According to the director of the Red Cross programme in Mozambique, Ilídio Nhatuve, the support consists of personal hygiene and menstrual kits, construction material, as well as two tarpaulins for each family.
He recalled that in that part of the country, the climate phenomenon ‘seriously affected’ 249,787 people, emphasising that the aim of the aid is to help 10% of the affected population.
Dikeledi, the second cyclone to hit northern Mozambique in the space of a month, hit Mossuril in category 3 (on a scale of 1 to 5), with winds of up to 195 kilometres per hour.
At least 11 people died and almost 20,000 houses were destroyed, according to the latest official figures from the Mozambican authorities.
Mozambique is considered one of the countries most severely affected by climate change in the world, facing cyclical floods and tropical cyclones during the rainy season, which runs from October to April.
