SOJOGO, the non-profit entity operating social lottery games in Mozambique, has spotlighted Santa Carolina — an island in the Bazaruto archipelago in Inhambane province — as the third of the Seven Wonders of Mozambique to be featured on its lottery tickets, as part of an ongoing initiative to promote and raise awareness of the country's national heritage.
Known for decades as 'Paradise Island', Santa Carolina forms part of a region of exceptional natural and environmental value, distinguished by its landscapes and marine ecosystems. Regarded as one of Mozambique's foremost natural heritage sites, the island is also among the principal tourist attractions of Inhambane province.
According to a statement issued by SOJOGO to Diário Económico, the initiative aims to give visibility to national heritage through lottery tickets, using them as a vehicle to showcase places that form part of the history and collective memory of Mozambicans. 'The presentation of Santa Carolina continues the initiative dedicated to the Seven Wonders of Mozambique,' the statement read.
'Santa Carolina evokes a very special memory. It is the image of a Mozambique that holds within its territory places of extraordinary beauty that we often do not yet know well enough. By drawing attention once again to the former Paradise Island, we want Mozambicans to feel proud of this heritage and to wish to discover it, preserve it, and pass it on to future generations,' said SOJOGO Director-General Alcina Santiago.
SOJOGO said the initiative seeks to tell stories through lottery tickets, highlighting sites that form part of the national heritage and continue to represent the natural and cultural diversity of Mozambique.
The lottery's top prize stands at one million meticais. A full ticket is priced at 150 meticais, while individual fractions are available for 30 meticais.
