Although no flights from Maputo are scheduled for the moment, after the order issued last Friday by the Portuguese Ministry of Internal Administration which suspended air links with Mozambique, the same order authorises “flights to support the return of nationals or holders of residence permits in Portugal, as well as of a humanitarian nature”, somewhat like a movement that has already taken place, in 2020, in the early months of the pandemic, and when the airspace was closed for commercial flights between the two countries.
The Portuguese government is therefore preparing the repatriation of nationals and holders of residence permits who are in Mozambique, although at this time no flights have been scheduled for this purpose, which will be announced by the Portuguese authorities in the coming days.
The assurance, was given this Saturday by Portuguese daily PÚBLICO citing a source from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, two days after the executive determined the suspension of flights to and from Mozambique from 0h this Monday, 29 November, a restriction motivated by the detection of the new variant of covid-19, Ómicron.
Several countries, including Portugal, have applied flight restrictions with several African countries after the new variant of the coronavirus, Omicron, was detected in South Africa, which according to the World Health Organisation (WHO) may involve greater infectivity due to “a high number of mutations.
