Millennium Bim Backs Ildefonso Colaço Photography Show in Maputo

Millennium Bim, through its institutional partnership with the Centro Cultural Franco-Moçambicano (CCFM), is supporting the photography exhibition 'The Body as Frontier' by Mozambican photographer Ildefonso Colaço, which opened on Wednesday, 9 July, on the exterior railings of the cultural centre in Maputo.

Curated by Inês Dias, the exhibition interprets the body as a political, poetic and symbolic space in which identity, memory, culture and history intersect. Inspired by the concept of Afrofuturism and the urban environment, the show explores the notion of 're-existence' — a mode of being that resists, reinvents itself and asserts its place.

'The Body as Frontier invites us to look at the city and the people who inhabit it from a different perspective. By supporting this exhibition, Millennium Bim helps emerging creators find space, visibility and new audiences, while fostering a closer connection between culture and people's everyday lives,' said José Artur Caetano, executive director of Millennium Bim, quoted in a bank press release.

The roughly ten large-format photographs depict bodies from the city's peripheries set within alleyways, ruins and various urban landscapes, transforming those locations into spaces of affirmation, belonging and the imagining of possible futures.

Situated between the documentary and the imaginary, the images explore the relationship between body, space and identity, drawing on performative gestures, direct framing and chromatic contrasts between organic matter and urban architecture.

The installation on the CCFM's exterior railings gives the exhibition an unconventional format, allowing the works to be viewed by passers-by in the public space and bringing photography closer to the city and its residents.

The initiative forms part of the cultural calendar supported by Millennium Bim under its partnership with the CCFM, which is oriented towards promoting artistic creation, nurturing emerging talent and broadening public access to diverse forms of cultural expression.
