After a tour of international festivals across Africa and Europe, ‘The Anchorage of Time’ returns to Mozambique Island, the territory where it was filmed.
With the support of Millennium bim, the film by Mozambican director Sol de Carvalho will be screened from 17 to 19 September as part of the celebrations marking the 208th anniversary of Mozambique Island’s elevation to city status, according to a statement from the bank.
Adapted from the novel A Varanda do Frangipani by Mia Couto, the feature film has a particular connection with Mozambique Island, whose landscape and historical heritage contribute to the visual and symbolic atmosphere of the narrative. The film’s screenplay was written by Mia Couto and Sol de Carvalho, with musical direction by Stewart Sukuma.
For Rui Pedro, chairman of the Executive Committee of Millennium bim, screening the film at the very location where it was shot lends the initiative special significance.
“There is a particular meaning in presenting this film on Mozambique Island. After travelling through international festivals, the work reaches the audience of the territory where it was filmed, bringing together cinema, literature and heritage in a single moment. By associating ourselves with this initiative, we contribute to bringing the public closer to Mozambican creative work and to highlighting new ways of telling Mozambique’s story,” said Rui Pedro.
The support for the screening is one of the initiatives selected under the institutional partnership between Millennium bim and Camões – Instituto da Cooperação e da Língua, I.P., oriented towards the promotion of culture, artistic dialogue, and the circulation of works and creators.
‘The Anchorage of Time’ follows Izidine, a young police inspector called to investigate the death of the director of a care home housed in an old colonial fortress.
The investigation takes an unexpected turn when all the elderly residents confess to the crime, steering the narrative towards questions of memory, justice, and the weight of history. The screening on Mozambique Island thus establishes a direct connection between the work and the territory that served as the backdrop for its story.
