MEREC, a Mozambican food company, has donated approximately half a tonne of spaghetti pasta to families in vulnerable situations in the municipality of Nacala, Nampula province, in the north of the country.
The initiative was carried out in partnership with the Nacala Municipal Council, through the office of Agira Giquira, wife of the President of the Municipal Council. It benefited two associations of women entrepreneurs from the neighbourhoods of Ontupaia 2 and Bloco 1, as well as orphanages located in the Uber area, according to a company statement.
The donation contributed to strengthening food security for more than 100 families and dozens of children, supporting groups facing economic and social challenges in their daily lives.
Among the beneficiaries are 30 women, predominantly aged between 30 and 50, who are engaged in the production and sale of meals for workers across formal and informal sectors, particularly those linked to construction.
With the growing number of construction projects in Nacala, this activity has become a source of income for these entrepreneurs, who provide meals during workers' break periods.
For the leader of the initiative, the collaboration between the public and private sectors was fundamental to promoting social welfare and strengthening community inclusion. "This gesture by MEREC represents much more than a food donation. It is a demonstration of solidarity towards women who fight daily for the livelihood of their families. We are grateful for this partnership and hope it inspires other institutions to join this cause," said Giquira.
MEREC's Director-General, Gilberto Cossa, stated that corporate social responsibility is one of the company's core pillars and is tied to its commitment to contributing to the country's sustainable development.
"At MEREC, we believe that a company's growth only makes sense when it moves side by side with community development. This initiative reaffirms our commitment to supporting those most in need and to building partnerships that generate a positive and lasting impact. We will continue to invest in corporate social responsibility actions that promote food security, inclusion, and the well-being of Mozambican families," Cossa said.
MEREC argues that initiatives of this nature allow it to "strengthen its connection with the communities in which it operates, promoting actions that go beyond industrial activity and contribute to improving the quality of life of local populations." Through its social projects, the company aims to continue "supporting vulnerable communities, encouraging sustainable initiatives with a direct impact on family incomes and local development."
