MEREC, one of Mozambique’s leading food industry companies, and the National Blood Service (SENASA) collected more than 200 litres of blood during a national blood donation campaign held to mark the National Blood Donor Day, observed on 29 August, across the country’s three regions.
According to a press statement from MEREC, the initiative benefited communities in areas where the company operates manufacturing facilities, drawing in donors, partners, and local organisations. Notable participants included the Government of Nampula, the Nacala municipal authority, and the Nacala Blood Donors Association (ADASNA).
Held between 28 and 29 August, the campaign covered four locations: Maputo, Beira, Nacala, and Nampula. The northern city of Nampula recorded the highest participation, with more than 150 donors.
For MEREC Director-General Gilberto Cossa, the campaign results demonstrate the importance of cross-sector collaboration in advancing initiatives for the common good.
“Donating blood is a simple gesture, but it can make a significant difference. Every drop collected represents an opportunity to save a life. This campaign shows what we can achieve when companies, institutions, and communities unite behind a shared cause,” Cossa said.
Across Mozambique’s northern, central, and southern regions, MEREC regularly implements a range of corporate social responsibility activities, with a particular focus on community promotion and empowerment, including nutrition and health, education, and environmental sustainability.
The company has stated its commitment to continuing its support for communities, contributing to a more resilient, united, and cohesive Mozambique.
