The Mozambique Electricity Company (EDM) launched, this Thursday, 22nd of December, in Maputo, its social responsibility policy, an instrument that aims to formalise the social activities that, since its creation in 1977, have been developed through support and sponsorship.
According to the company, the document includes a set of procedures that will guide the selection of beneficiaries of EDM’s support and sponsorship, via public tenders and projects, which should be adjusted to the areas of intervention defined by the company, such as sport, education and knowledge, energy efficiency, environmental protection, volunteer work and health.
According to the PCA of EDM, Marcelino Gildo Alberto, the company is determined to invest in actions that promote the social well-being of Mozambicans and strengthen the link between the institution and the communities.
“Our Social Responsibility policy is, in short, the energy of an attitude for change, as we believe that our actions will have a positive impact on Mozambican society,” he said.
Marcelino Gildo Alberto also said that the company intends to establish a platform for active participation and ethical and transparent dialogue with the public, considering the expectations and the social, cultural, economic and environmental contexts of Mozambicans.
“We are aware that, because we are a socially responsible company, we cannot limit ourselves to fulfilling the competencies and attributions entrusted to us by the Government. The gains from the implementation of this instrument will be beneficial to all,” said the PCA, having reiterated EDM’s commitment to a culture of transparency, integrity and good governance in the management of support and sponsorship granted by the company.
In her turn, the director of EDM’s Communication and Institutional Relations Office, Stélia Neta, said that with the operationalization of the social responsibility policy, the company expects to see improved relationships with communities, local governments, local authorities, civil society organizations and other stakeholders.
“We also expect the promotion of good institutional image and reputation, with the enhancement of the positive impacts of EDM’s Corporate Social Responsibility actions. Likewise, we would like to see engaged the values of solidarity, spirit of institutional belonging, cohesion and commitment of employees, at all levels, as well as the recognition of EDM as a competitive company, leader in the energy sector and outstanding example of corporate citizenship,” said the official.
At the event, which included several representatives from civil society, there was space for testimonials from institutions that have already received support from EDM. The keynote of the speeches was the significant contribution of the state-owned company in improving the beneficiaries’ living conditions.
The public tender for the provision of support and sponsorship by EDM begins next year.
