Cabo Delgado: Private Sector Joins Forces to Promote Sustainable Development

Several companies and foundations from the private sector formalized, on Thursday, the 16th, in Pemba, a joint commitment to promote sustainable development and the reconstruction of Cabo Delgado, through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding establishing the Private Sector Partnership for Development (PSPD).

According to a statement from Vodacom, the initiative brings together efforts from ExxonMobil Mozambique Limited, the Mozambique LNG Foundation (founded by the consortium operated by TotalEnergies), the RESET Foundation (founded by members of the Ferreira dos Santos family – JFS), the Vodacom Mozambique Foundation, and Twigg Exploration and Mining Limited (a subsidiary of Syrah Resources). These organizations have joined forces to promote inclusive and sustainable socio-economic development in the northern region of the country.

During the ceremony, the Governor of Cabo Delgado Province, Valige Tauabo, highlighted the relevance of the initiative and the role of the private sector in the social and economic reconstruction of the province. “Cabo Delgado is at a decisive moment. It is through initiatives like this that we reinforce trust in institutions and create conditions for sustainable, people-centered development. The presence of committed companies and foundations demonstrates that the province’s future will be built through cooperation, innovation, and responsibility,” he said, adding that the PSPD constitutes “an inspiring model of how private investment can align with public development goals.”

In the same vein, the Chairman of the Board of the Vodacom Foundation, Hermenegildo Gamito, emphasized the decisive role of multisectoral partnerships. “We believe that real impact arises when the private sector, government, and civil society work in a coordinated manner. Through the PSPD, we aim to contribute to strengthening communities by investing in projects that promote education, digital inclusion, entrepreneurship, and social resilience,” he stated.

Lucie N’Guessan, representing ExxonMobil Mozambique Limited, highlighted that the initiative represents a concrete step in consolidating sustainable partnerships for the development of Cabo Delgado. “Lasting progress is achieved when we combine economic investment with human investment. Through the PSPD, we reaffirm our commitment to contributing to a more resilient and inclusive future in Cabo Delgado.”

Similarly, Narjess Saidane, representative of the Mozambique LNG Foundation, emphasized the need to address local challenges through coordinated strategies. “Cabo Delgado presents great opportunities, but also significant challenges. Working together allows investments and social programs to be more effective and consistently benefit communities.”

Complementing this commitment, the RESET Foundation, represented by António Correia, stressed the importance of projects that foster local autonomy and resilience. “Investing in education, capacity building, and innovation is crucial for communities to fully leverage the province’s economic opportunities.”

Throughout the ceremony, it was evident, as highlighted in the press release, that participants agreed on the need to strengthen dialogue and cooperation between the State and the private sector, especially in provinces most affected by structural challenges.

The signing of the memorandum thus symbolizes a milestone in advancing a participatory development model, aimed at strengthening communities, creating economic opportunities, and promoting an inclusive economy.
