Banco Comercial e de Investimentos (BCI) and the United States Embassy in Mozambique have expanded the collection of the BCI Media Library in Maputo through a book donation targeting students, teachers, researchers, and the general public. The initiative may also give rise to joint programmes aimed at broadening learning opportunities.
According to a statement issued by BCI, the donated works cover areas including art, literature, technology, personal development, and children’s and young adult literature. The books have been incorporated into the BCI Media Library’s collection and are now available for public consultation, strengthening the bibliographic resources accessible to users.
The donation was accompanied by the identification of potential areas of cooperation between the two institutions. Initiatives under consideration include online courses and other digital training content, the expansion of the collection to cover fields such as engineering, and dedicated learning opportunities for vulnerable groups, among other audiences.
‘A book can open doors, awaken vocations, stimulate ideas, and broaden horizons. Investing in knowledge is also investing in the future of Mozambique,’ said Telma Jorge, coordinator of the BCI Media Libraries, underscoring the importance of access to learning resources.
During a guided visit, the US Embassy delegation was introduced to the operation of the BCI Media Library, the audiences it serves, the activities it hosts, and its development prospects. The delegation expressed willingness to contribute to the expansion of the collection and to promote new forms of access to knowledge.
The growing relationship between the two institutions could also lead to initiatives in financial literacy and the cultural and creative industries, as well as exchanges with US institutions linked to the arts and the creative economy. These possibilities complement the learning initiatives already identified.
Recently renovated and modernised, the BCI Media Library in Maputo hosts training sessions, workshops, exhibitions, and public talks, while also providing free internet access. BCI operates additional media libraries in Beira, Nampula, and Ilha de Moçambique, extending the reach of the service across the country.
The reinforced collection and the new avenues for collaboration are expected to broaden the range of educational resources available and create fresh training and development opportunities for users of BCI’s media library network.
