BCI and Author António Niquice Donate Cashew Industry Book to UEM

Banco Comercial e de Investimentos (BCI) has donated copies of the book Economia do Caju em Moçambique – O Contexto das Políticas de Bretton Woods e os Pressupostos da Engenharia de Reindustrialização, authored by professor António Niquice, to Eduardo Mondlane University (UEM), making available to students, lecturers and researchers an in-depth analysis of agro-industry’s potential to generate value, employment and income in Mozambique.

According to a statement from the bank, the work revisits the trajectory of the cashew industry and places at the centre of debate a pressing contemporary challenge: how to process domestically the resources produced in the country, adding value before export. Cashew holds particular relevance in this discussion given the historically significant role it has played in the national economy and, above all, its impact on the income of rural families and communities.

“Every book that reaches a library represents knowledge made available — an opportunity for research and, eventually, the starting point for new ideas and new solutions,” said BCI administrator Farhana Razak. She emphasised that supporting education and knowledge constitutes, for BCI, a means of investing in the country’s sustainable development.

António Niquice, for his part, stressed the importance of bringing research to a wider audience. “Knowledge only has value when it is shared,” he said, thanking BCI for enabling the work to reach more readers through UEM.

According to the author, the experience of the cashew sector should serve as a reference point for a broader discussion on the national productive model. Mozambique, he argued, needs to capitalise on the different stages of value chains, advancing from the production of raw materials to their processing and transformation. “The cashew industry and cashew itself are a sample of what we must do, and do well,” he said.

UEM Vice-Rector Mohsin Sidat highlighted the donation’s contribution to student access to knowledge about national realities. “For us, it is an enormous satisfaction and an honour to receive this work, which will enrich the university’s bibliographic collection,” he said, encouraging students to use the publication to explore the social and economic dimensions of the sector.

The initiative extends the ongoing partnership between BCI and UEM across areas including education, research, culture, sport and heritage, reinforcing the circulation of knowledge and the search for responses to Mozambique’s economic and social challenges.
