Absa Turns Everyday Card Purchases Into a Mauritius Holiday

As Mozambique’s financial market evolves and becomes more connected to international solutions and networks, customers are gaining access to benefits, programmes, and experiences that were long associated only with more mature financial markets.

It is in this context that clients from different segments of Absa Bank Mozambique, drawn from Maputo and Moatize in Tete Province, are currently experiencing an international trip to Mauritius, having been selected as winners of an Absa Visa Card campaign.

‘The initiative transformed a simple everyday gesture — using a card to pay for purchases — into the opportunity to live an international experience. Each winner will travel accompanied by a person of their choice, in an experience that includes accommodation, leisure activities, and other small comforts such as access to international airport lounges,’ the bank said in a press release.

Beyond rewarding customers, the campaign highlights a significant shift in how bank cards are perceived in Mozambique. Security, convenience, and speed remain essential, but they now coexist with benefits, partnerships, recognition programmes, and experiences linked to card usage.

This evolution mirrors the broader transformation of the country’s payments ecosystem, driven by investment in digitalisation, security, interoperability, and the modernisation of financial infrastructure.

At the prize-giving ceremony, winners shared their surprise at seeing a routine card transaction result in an experience of this scale, and spoke of the confidence they hold in their relationship with the bank.

For Denise Cruz, Director of Personal and Private Banking at Absa Bank Mozambique, this transformation is also raising customer expectations with regard to banking services. ‘A card should no longer be seen merely as a way to make payments. Our customers are increasingly connected to the world and expect solutions that keep pace with that evolution,’ she said. According to Cruz, the objective is to make available from Mozambique not only simple and secure payment methods, but also benefits, partnerships, and experiences that add value to clients’ daily lives.

The campaign invited customers to use their Absa Visa Debit or Credit Cards for purchases, converting eligible transactions into entries into a prize draw.

During the prize-giving event, winners highlighted their surprise at seeing an everyday card transaction translate into an experience of this magnitude, and underscored the trust they maintain in their relationship with the bank.

Behind the daily use of cards lies a continuous investment in technology, security, and the reliability of the systems that underpin every transaction. ‘Every time a customer uses an Absa card — whether to make a purchase, pay for a service, or carry out a transaction abroad — there is enormous work happening behind the scenes to ensure that experience is simple, fast, and secure. Trust is earned every day, with every transaction,’ said Akila Ghumra, Chief Operations Officer at Absa Bank Mozambique.

This investment allows customers to use their cards both within Mozambique and abroad, and to access the benefits available through the Visa network, in line with the growing internationalisation of financial services.

For Absa, this evolution presents banks with the challenge of going beyond the simple execution of transactions and offering services and benefits that add genuine value to the customer experience.

For the campaign’s winners, that value took a very concrete form: an everyday purchase in Mozambique ended up taking them all the way to Mauritius.
