COP-28: United Arab Emirates Formalises Invitation to Mozambique for Climate Conference

The United Arab Emirates’ (UAE) President formalised an invitation to his Mozambican counterpart to participate in the COP-28 climate conference that the Arab confederation hosts in November, in a moment also of approach between the two countries.

The Mozambican President, Filipe Nyusi, visited the Emirates in October 2022 and in January this year.

There is a “positive evolution of cooperation relations between the two countries, in the political, diplomatic and economic fields,” the Arab embassy in Mozambique said on Tuesday 9 May in a statement, which also highlighted “the encouraging level of investment from the public and private sectors and humanitarian actions.

The Emirates highlight that “the main achievement of COP27 was the creation of a fund aimed at the poorest nations”, affected “negatively” by natural disasters “consequences of climate change”. In this chapter, Mozambique is among the most vulnerable countries in the world.

The cooperation plans between the UAE and Mozambique touch several domains. During his last visit to the Emirates, in January, the Mozambican head of state announced that the Arab confederation may contribute to the reconstruction of the National Road Number 1 (N1), the country’s backbone, and where works are expected to start in the coming years with support from the World Bank.

Filipe Nyusi also announced plans to support the financing of small and medium Mozambican companies through the Kalifa Fund, established by the government of Abu Dhabi, with an envelope of 25 million dollars.

Other business opportunities in Mozambique were also left open, along with the objective of military cooperation, which had already been addressed during Filipe Nyusi’s visit to the UAE in October last year.

The United Arab Emirates are among the 29 states that have been exempt from visa requirements for entry into Mozambique since May 1.
