Wildlife Resources Generated Almost $4M for Mozambique in 2024

The use of natural resources in Mozambique, such as sport hunting, brought in 250 million meticals (3.5 million euros) last year, as a result of the migration from the manual to the electronic licensing system (PHC), an official source announced.

‘During the process of implementing the PHC, the state managed to collect 250 million meticals from the activity and, of this amount, 149.3 million [2.1 million euros] refers to sport hunting,’ said the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, Environment and Fisheries, Emília Fumo, during the annual meeting on poaching 2025 in Maputo.

The electronic licensing system (PHC) is business management software that can be acquired through different types of licence.

According to the representative, sport hunting has also made it possible to channel around 25.3 million meticals [363,000 euros] to the communities surrounding these conservation areas, ‘which refers to 20% of the revenue from these activities’.

‘The revenue collected (…) increased by around 11.8 million meticals [169.3 thousand euros] compared to 2023. This increase was essentially due to the implementation of the electronic licensing system [PHC],’ she said.

The permanent secretary also said that last year 760 hunters were licensed across the country, a reduction of 23 compared to the previous year, when around 783 hunters were licensed.

Emília Fumo also explained that this year the Mozambican authorities are going to carry out a nationwide fauna census in order to understand the level of elephant population growth in the country.

According to this source, the study will include specific censuses for ‘emblematic species’ such as the hippopotamus and leopard.

The PHC was implemented last year as a way of automating and modernising the licensing process for activities related to conservation and the use of natural resources in Mozambique’s conservation areas.
