Mozambican police have detained three men in possession of two rhinoceros horns that they intended to sell in the country’s capital, the police said on Tuesday.
The men, aged between 28 and 41, were arrested on Friday night along National Road Number 4, said Carminia Leite, police spokeswoman in Maputo province.
“The police reached them through a tip-off. The horns were in a briefcase and they were travelling in a van transporting passengers to Maputo,” she said.
The men said they were intermediaries and that they had received the horns from their boss in Moamba district, on the outskirts of Maputo.
The group was detained, Leite said, calling for rhinoceros horns not to be smuggled as they are a “protected and endangered species in the country.
