The Minister of Land and Environment, Ivete Maibaze, directs today, Monday (5), in Mogincual district, Nampula province, the central ceremonies of the World Environment Day, which this year is celebrated under the slogan “Avoid plastic pollution, be part of the solution”.
According to a note issued by the Ministry of Land and Environment, the slogan chosen reflects one of the biggest environmental problems faced by the planet – plastic pollution – with severe negative impacts on human health and several species of marine animals, a fact that puts them at great risk of extinction.
In this regard, the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) reveals that it is possible to reduce plastic pollution by up to 80% by 2040 if countries and companies adopt the right measures using technologies that are already available.
In Mogincual, the minister will launch the Coastal Biodiversity Protection Project (PROBICO), a joint initiative between the governments of Mozambique and Portugal, through Camões-Institute for Cooperation and Language and the Association for Youth and Adult Education of Nampula (ASEJANA).
The celebrations of the World Environment Day are taking place today in all provinces and include activities such as tree planting, cleaning, lectures and competitions, with the aim of boosting educational activities aimed at improving the quality of life of citizens and the environment.
