The Minister of Land and Environment, Ivete Maibaze, said on Thursday, 14 November, in Maputo, that the country had reached 30% of the global amount of 31.6 billion meticals (500 million dollars) set aside to implement the Risk Reduction Action Plan associated with climate change and the Miombo Convention.
According to the Mozambican Information Agency, the country is taking part in the Conference of the Parties (COP 29) in Baku, Azerbaijan, with a delegation led by the Mozambican ambassador to the United States of America. ‘This delegation is accompanied by officials from the Ministry of Land and Environment and institutions linked to climate change,’ she said.
The minister was speaking moments after the launch of the bilateral report on Disaster Risk Reduction in Africa 2021-2022, chaired by the President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi. ‘On the sidelines of this conference, Mozambique had the opportunity to take part in an event to sign the memorandum of understanding with other states of the Miombo Convention,’ she said.
It should be noted that Mozambique is leading an international effort to protect the Miombo Forest, the largest dry tropical forest ecosystem in the world, which covers 11 African countries and supports more than 300 million people. The government’s action plan focuses on monitoring and developing sustainable projects that offer alternatives to logging, one of the main causes of deforestation in the region.
